묵주기도 - the Holy Rosary

Sign of the Cross
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Apostles’ Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty creator of heaven and earth and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God, the Father almighty. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Our Father
Our Father, who art in heaven hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Hail Mary
Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women, And blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, Pray for us sinners, Now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Glory Be
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Oh My Jesus
O my Jesus, forgive us of our sins. Save us from the fires of hell. Lead all souls into heaven, especially those in most need of thy mercy. Amen.

Hail Holy Queen
Hail Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our Life, our Sweetness, and our hope. To thee we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To thee we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this vale of tears. Turn then most gracious advocate, Thine eyes of mercy toward us, and after this, our exile, show unto us, the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary. Pray for us O Holy Mother of God, That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Amen.

Final Prayer
Let us pray. O God, whose only begotten Son, by His life, death, and resurrection, has purchased for us the rewards of eternal life, grant, we beseech Thee, that meditating upon these mysteries of the Most Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise, through the same Christ Our Lord. Amen.

The purpose of the Rosary is to help keep in memory certain principal events in the history of our salvation. There are twenty mysteries reflected upon in the Rosary, and these are divided into the five Joyful Mysteries (said on Monday and Saturday), the five Luminous Mysteries (said on Thursday), the five Sorrowful Mysteries (said on Tuesday and Friday), and the five Glorious Mysteries (said on Wednesday and Sunday). As an exception, the Joyful Mysteries are said on Sundays during Christmas, while the Sorrowful Mysteries are said on the Sundays of Lent.

The question is sometimes asked, why, of all the incidents in our Lord’s life, the Rosary only considers these particular twenty. The mysteries of the Rosary are based on the incidents in the life of Our Lord and His Mother that are celebrated in the Liturgy. There is a parallel between the main feasts honoring our Lord and his Mother in the liturgical year, and the twenty mysteries of the Rosary. Consequently, one who recites the twenty mysteries of the Rosary in one day reflects on the whole liturgical cycle that the Church commemorates during the course of each year. That is why some of the Popes have referred to the Rosary as a compendium of the Gospel. One cannot change the mysteries of the Rosary without losing the indulgences that the Church grants for the recitation of the Rosary.

The steps to praying the Rosary are:

  1. Make the Sign of the Cross and say the “Apostles’ Creed”
  2. Say the “Our Father”
  3. Say three “Hail Marys” for Faith, Hope, and Charity
  4. Say the “Glory Be”
  5. Announce the First Mystery and then say the “Our Father”
  6. Say ten “Hail Marys” while meditating on the Mystery
  7. Say the “Glory Be” (Optional: Say the “O My Jesus” prayer requested by Mary at Fatima)
  8. Announce the Second Mystery; then say the “Our Father” and repeat these steps as you continue through the remaining Mysteries.
  9. Say the “Hail Holy Queen” and verse
  10. Say the “Final Prayer”
  11. Make the “Sign of the Cross”

Pope Saint John Paul II suggested the recitation of the Rosary as follows: the JOYFUL mysteries Monday and Saturday, the LUMINOUS on Thursday, the SORROWFUL on Tuesday and Friday, and the GLORIOUS on Wednesday and Sunday (with this exception; Sundays of Advent and Christmas – the JOYFUL; Sundays of Lent – the SORROWFUL). Here is a chart:

Monday     JOYFUL
Tuesday    SORROWFUL
Wednesday  GLORIOUS
Thursday   LUMINOUS
Friday     SORROWFUL
Saturday   JOYFUL
Sundays of Advent and Christmas JOYFUL
Sundays of Lent SORROWFUL
Other Sundays GLORIOUS

From the Book True Devotion to Mary
by Saint Louis Marie DeMontfort

Jesus Christ our Savior, true God and true Man,
ought to be the last end of all our other devotions,
else they are false and delusive.
Jesus Christ is the Alpha and the Omega,
the beginning and the end, of all things.
It is in Him alone that we have been blessed
with all spiritual benediction;
and He is our only Master, who has to teach us;
our only Lord on whom we ought to depend;
our only Head to whom we must be united;
our only Model to whom we should conform ourselves;
our only Physician who can heal us;
our only Shepherd who can feed us;
our only Way who can lead us;
our only Truth whom we must believe;
our only Life who can animate us;
and our only All in all things who can satisfy us.

There has been no other name given under Heaven,
except the name of Jesus, by who we can be saved.
God has laid no other foundation of our salvation,
our perfection or our glory, than Jesus Christ.
Every building which is not built on that firm rock
is founded upon the moving sand,
and sooner or later infallibly will fall.
Every one of the faithful who is not united to Him,
as a branch to the stock of the vine, shall fall, shall wither,
and shall be fit only to be cast into the fire.
Outside of Him there exists nothing but error, falsehood,
iniquity, futility, death and damnation.

 "If, then, we establish solid devotion to our Blessed Lady,
it is only to establish more perfectly devotion to Jesus Christ,
and to provide an easy and secure means for finding Jesus Christ.
If devotion to Our Lady removed us from Jesus Christ,
we should have to reject it as an illusion of the devil;
but so far from this being the case,
devotion to Our Lady is, on the contrary, necessary for us -
as I have already shown, and will show still further hereafter
- as a means of finding Jesus Christ perfectly,
of loving Him tenderly, of serving Him faithfully. "

To grow in holiness and in one's prayer life.

There are many reasons why the rosary
should be prayed often, even daily:

"Among all the devotions approved by the Church
none has been so favored by so many miracles
as the devotion of the Most Holy Rosary" (Pope Pius IX).

 "Say the Rosary every day to obtain peace for the world"

(Our Lady of Fatima)

"There is no surer means of calling down God's blessings upon the family . . . than the daily recitation of the Rosary"

(Pope Pius XII)

"We do not hesitate to affirm again publicly that we put great confidence in the Holy Rosary for the healing of evils of our times" (Pope Pius XII)

"No one can live continually in sin
and continue to say the Rosary:
either they will give up sin or they will give up the Rosary" (Bishop Hugh Doyle)

"The Rosary is a magnificent and universal prayer
for the needs of the Church,
the nations and the entire world" (Pope John XXIII)

"The Rosary is the compendium of the entire Gospel"
(Pope Paul VI quoting Pope Pius XII)

"Meditation on the mysteries of the Rosary . . can be an excellent preparation for the celebration of those same mysteries in the liturgical actions [i.e. the Mass] and can also become a continuing echo thereof" (Pope Paul VI)

"My impression is that the Rosary is of the greatest value not only according to the words of Our Lady at Fatima, but according to the effects of the Rosary one sees throughout history.
My impression is that Our Lady wanted to give
ordinary people, who might not know how to pray, this simple method of getting closer to God"
(Sister Lucia, one of the seers of Fatima)

"How beautiful is the family
that recites the Rosary every evening"

(Pope John Paul II)

St. Louis de Montfort warns us against
both the ignorant and scholars
who regard the Rosary as something of little importance:

"The Son of God became man for our salvation;
but it was in Mary and by Mary.
God the Holy Ghost formed Jesus Christ in Mary;
but it was only after having asked her consent
by one of the first ministers of His court.
God the Father communicated to Mary His fruitfulness,
inasmuch as a mere creature was capable of it,
in order that He might give her the power to produce His Son
and all the members of His Mystical Body.
God the Holy Ghost, being barren in God
- that is to say, not producing another Divine Person
is become fruitful by Mary, whom He has espoused.
It was with her, in her, and of her
that He produced His Masterpiece,
which is God made Man,
and that He goes on producing daily,
to the end of the world, the predestinate
and the members of the body of that adorable Head.

"God the Father made an assemblage
of all the waters and He named it the sea -mare.
He made an assemblage of all His graces
and He called it Mary - Maria.
This great God has a most rich treasury
in which He has laid up all that He has
of beauty and splendor, of rarity and preciousness,
including even His own Son:
and this immense treasury is none other than Mary,
whom the saints have named the Treasure of the Lord,
out of whose plenitude all men are made rich."
