<할로윈, 모든 성인 대축일과 위령의 날>
(1) 할로윈(Hallowe'en)의 참된 의미
10월 31일에 지내는 “할로윈”이란 말은 원래 거룩한 전야제(Hallowed Evening; Hallowed는 Holy의 옛말)를 의미하며, 그 다음날인 11월 1일은 모든 성인의 날 대축일(All Saints Day)이고 11월 2일은 위령의 날이기 때문이라고 합니다. 할로윈 저녁에 어린이들과 가난한 이들이 성가를 부르며 마을에서 최근에 세상을 떠난 이들을 위해 기도하며 집집마다 방문하면 Soul Cake(영혼의 떡)를 주며 감사를 표시하는 것이 원래의 전통적 가톨릭 풍습이었다고 하는군요. 이 거룩한 축제가 너무 세속화되어 오히려 사악한 저녁이 되어 가고 있는 현실이 안타깝습니다. 그리고 할로윈에는 호박을 구하여 그 속을 제거한 후 껍데기 속에 촛불을 꼽아 놓는 관습이 있는데, 빈 호박 속에 꼽혀 있는 그 촛불은 인간의 육신은 죽어도 영혼은 영원하다는 사실을 의미한다고 합니다.
(2) 세상을 떠난 영혼들을 위한 전대사
1. 연옥 영혼들을 위한 전대사 (11월 1일 ~ 11월 8일)
연옥 영혼들에게만 적용 가능한 전대사가 11월 1일부터 11월 8일 사이에 경건한 마음으로 묘지를 방문하여 거기에서 고인을 위하여 기도하는 이에게 주어짐. 이 기간 사이에 날마다 전대사를 받을 수 있음.
2. 위령의 날 전대사 (11월 2일)
위령의 날에 경건하게 교회나 기도소를 방문하여 주의 기도 한 번과 사도신경을 바치는 자에게 전대사가 수여됨.
참고: 전대사를 받기 위한 조건
0 세례를 받고 은총 지위에 있을 것
0 20일 이내에 고해성사를 받음
0 성체를 모심 (성체를 모실 때마다 전대사 수여 가능)
0 교황의 지향을 위해 기도 (적어도 사도신경 한 번과 주의 기도 한 번)

For the Souls in Purgatory – Plenary Indulgence
A plenary indulgence, applicable only to the souls in purgatory, is granted each and every day from Nov. 1 to Nov. 8, who devoutly visit a cemetery and there pray, if only mentally, for the departed.
Grant #29.1.2
All Souls’ Day – Plenary Indulgence
A plenary indulgence is granted the faithful who, on All Souls’ Day (or according to the judgment of the bishop, on the Sunday preceding or following it, or on the solemnity of All Saints), devoutly visits a church or an oratory and recites an Our Father and the Apostles Creed.
Please keep in mind that an indulgence is granted to the faithful who devoutly visit a cemetery and pray for the dead (even if the prayer is only mental) during the first 8 days of November. A plenary indulgence, applicable only to the Souls in Purgatory, is also granted to the faithful, who piously visit a church or a public oratory on All Souls Day. In visiting the church or oratory, it is required that one Our Father and the Creed be recited.
Both of these indulgences are granted under the normal conditions, i.e., one must be baptized and in the state of grace, be free from an attachment to sin, go to confession within 20 days, receive Holy Communion on the day you visit the cemetery or church, and offer prayers for the intentions of the Holy Father (a Creed and an Our Father will suffice).
